Retirement age demand under consideration : Chief Minister

Demand under consideration: Chief Minister
Srinagar, May 14: Days after dissenting employees threatened to dislodge his government, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday said the demand for enhancement of their retirement age was under consideration.
“We have fulfilled all the demands of the employees including grant of 6th pay commission arrears, release of HRA, DA, etc excepting one that of is raising the age of retirement by two years which is under the consideration of the government,” Omar told a public gathering after inaugurating the additional block of JLNM hospital Rainawari here.

Expressing dismay over what he called unnecessary protests by certain groups of employees, the Chief Minister said the government has all along been employee-friendly. “We are looking forward for some via media (on retirement age) which shall satisfy the interests of both the employees and the educated youth,” he said hinting towards the possibility of the government raising the retirement age by at least by one year in the first go.
Omar said the decision on this crucial issue (retirement age) is pending “as we do not want to debar the educated youth for two years from the opportunity of getting government jobs.”
“However, we have not shelved this demand and are looking forward for some via media on the issue,” he said.
Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) – an amalgam of different employees associations in the state – has called for three-day strike starting May 24. It has called for secretariat gherao on May 25 and Raj Bhavan Chalo on May 26 to press for the enhancement of the retirement age.
Earlier on May 8 police foiled the attempt by the agitating employees to gherao the civil secretariat here.
