Commitment of India Post towards its customers – a small example

Bruhaspati Samal, Secretary, AIPEU, Group-C, Bhubaneswar Division,

A 10 Year CTD Account   opened by one Sri Ranjan Kumar Bhattacharya (Retired General Manager, Coal India Ltd.)  on 10.06.1983 at Shankar Nagar Post Office (Nagpur) for a denomination of Rs.50/-  was subsequently transferred to Sahidnagar MDG (Bhubaneswar – 751 007) and continued up to 20.03.1991 with a total deposit of Rs.5000/-. On application for closure, though a sum of Rs.7572.35 was sanctioned on 31.10.1994, the amount could not be paid to the depositor due to his absence and failure of the authorized messenger in complying with the requirements of the Post Office. Due to the depositor’s absence in Bhubaneswar for his All India Service condition, neither any reply was received from him nor the post office could be able to effect payment.

Unexpectedly, Sri Bhattachaya attended Sahidnagar MDG on 16.02.2012 and preferred one application for effecting the  above payment.
P O S B 10 Year CTD Account introduced on 02.01.1959 has been abolished since 01.04.1986. Since 26 years have been elapsed in the mean time, it is quite natural that there may be hardly any case pending for claim / closure as on date.
Thus, seeing a claim on 16.02.2012, Postmaster, Sahidnagar MDG was very much surprised.
Concerned records like Ledger, Journal and Specimen Signature Book etc. were searched but nothing was available. During the period of last 26 years, the Post Office has gone several changes. Before coming to the present Departmental building, the post office has been shifted twice earlier. After fully computerization, many manual records have been discontinued and old records have been weeded out. The preservation period of S O CTD Journals for 10 year accounts is 12 years from the date of last entry.
Thus, finding no alternative, the case was forwarded to Bhubaneswar GPO with request to search the required records at their end for arriving at a solution. The Dy.. Postmaster, Bhubaneswar GPO took personal interest on the issue and concerned records were made available which facilitated closure of the CTD Account with up to date sanction.
When the matter was intimated to Mr. Bhattacharya over telephone, he preferred to write a letter to the Postmaster, Sahidnagar MDG which is reproduced below.
When there is daily news of accusing India Post for delayed service, the instant case proved how carefully and efficiently we handle a belated claim. This proves the commitment of India Post towards its customers.
I have never heard and experienced regarding timely settlement of such a delayed case by any other financial institutions. India Post is India Post. Really a friend of common man.
People will argue ignoring their lapses. But the employees of India Post  are committed to discharge their responsibilities with utmost sincerity. There is no dearth of efficient, willing and devoted workers in India Post.
